Two Huge New Announcements from the Illumi-Nerdi!

We have two pretty damn cool announcements!

Second things second: we're officially announcing that we're working on our second comic entitled 617.

Here's a brief tentative synopsis: A plane collides with another in midair and the group of survivors crash into the Rocky Mountains. From there, it is something of a road story; the group trying to get back to society and what happens when they get back to “civilization” (it’s extremely crucial that "civilization" is in quotes). As they are attempting to trek down the mountain the group splits apart and comes across survivors from the other plane as well as many characters who know much more about their predicament then they are letting on . It’s sort of a mix of Y: The Last Man meets Christian and Norse mythologies. It is also (perhaps most importantly) a literal clash of Technology vs. Religion. You’ll see Valkyries, The Four Horsemen (who are evil/questionable historical figures you’ll certainly recognize who are attempting to earn their way back into God’s good graces,) Fenrir the Wolf, a few choice Angels and the good ol' Antichrist makes an appearance (who may not appear as you might typically think about the Antichrist). We blend a lot of different mythologies and attempt to find the answer to "Life, the Universe and Everything" (hint: it's not 42).

New 52 #19's Gatefold Cover formely known as "WTF" Month

A few months ago, DC planned planned to mark April as "WTF" month. Sounds like a catchy idea, right? We thought so but everyone else hated it. So when "WTF" month went viral, people pretty much bashed it. At one point it looked like "WTF" month was going to be "What the Fifty-Two" month but that idea fell flat with the comic book market. For the past week and a half, covers have been leaked on Bleeding Cool, Newsarama and Comic Book Resources. 

It looks like Superman is wrapped in vines, angry and maybe being mind control. Are Poison Ivy and the Scarecrow working together? 

Did you read Batman #0? Before Bruce was dressed up as Batman, he was fighting crime and doing Beta-Batman stuff. Gordon noticed a connection between Bruce's return and the sudden appearance of Gotham's vigilante but Bruce denied all accusations. Now that Robin is dead, we can all expect Gordon to start connecting the dots again and Bruce can't have that.   

Batman #19 is technically Batman #900. 

One of the few disappointments in Batman's "Death of the Family" was that the story had zero major repercussions. However, that is not in case in other Bat-family books. In Red Hood and the Outlaws, Joker left one final joke for the Bat-family post-disappearance. Joker put together a serum, sneaked it into Red Hood's helmet and now he's in a comma. On the last page of #18, the bottom of the page said RHATO #19 "This is your life, Jason Todd". Was his memory erased?  It hints at that. However, the "WTF" cover for #19 has half of Todd's face burnt off. Oh, and kinda looks like Two-Face

Batman Earth 1: Vol. 2 News

Guess what? We have very exciting news for you. Everything we are about to tell you happened on the latest episode of  Kevin Smith's Fatman on Batman.  In Part 2 with Geoff Johns, the creators discussed Johns work on Batman: Earth 1 Vol. 1 and Vol. 2. In the Summer of 2013, DC Comics announced that the villain for Vol. 2 will be the Riddler but there is more.

For those who don't know, Earth 1 books are the new Esleworlds books for DC. Instead of taking the on going series route that Marvel did with the Ultimate Universe line, DC decided to publish graphic novels that focused on the origin stories but with drastic changes to the characters' mythologies. In the podcast, Johns described his version of Batman perfectly by calling it "Beta-Batman". For all of Batman's history, Alfred as been portrayed as a former actor and a fail old man. That's not the case anymore. In Earth 1, Alfred is an army buddy of Wayne Thomas, becomes head of security for Wayne Manor and he's a badass. Also, Geoff Johns does something different and radical. The madame name of Bruce's mother is Arkham. For new comic book readers, Arkham is now an Asylum and the home for Batman's rogues gallery. On a really fun note, Penguin is Mayor of Gotham and (Spoiler Alert) Alfred kills him at the end of Vol. 1.


 New Info on Earth 1: Vol.

Along side the Riddler, Johns will be introducing Earth 1's version of Killer Croc.

Yes! I am excited for Johns to work on Batman's scrubs. Besides Loeb's Hush, I've never seen the Riddler as an A lister. In my opinion, an A Lister villain always has the ability to beat Batman. Also, my fingers are crossed because I do not want to see Killer Croc as the crocodile version. I want the Killer Croc from the Animated Series. Yes, it's true. I am very conservative when it comes to hero and villain costumes/appearances.

Since Vol. 2 is still sort of an origin story, this is not your Batman. Johns describes a scene where Batman appears from the shadows and is standing on evidence. Detective Gordon notices that and says "You're stepping on evidence". Batman steps back and Gordon says "You're not much of a detective, are you?"

When was the last time we've seen a "Beta-Batman"? The answer might be "Year One". By writing Batman during this period in his life, Johns can accomplish so much. Yes, Snyder is writing a brilliant Batman but the character is flawless. Earth 1 Batman is unpredictable and far from perfect. Johns' Batman gets into a fist fight with Alfred and he does not know how to jump from roof to roof. If you're tired of the same old Batman stories then you WANT to buy Earth 1.  

Along with Gordon and Bullock, there will be several new characters joining the cast. There are several volumes planned and Robin, Catwoman and Clayface will be introduced. Johns' plan is to do one volume every fourteen months.

Comic News from ECCC 2013

This weekend was the Emerald City Comic Con (Seattle) and we are absolutely jealous of everyone that attended.  Even though ECCC might not measure in size next to SDCC and NYCC, it is a fan favorite. It's not too big, not too small, just the perfect size. Since Brian and I could not attend, we relied on sites like Bleeding Cool, Newsarama and CBR to fuel our comic needs. Everything that is highlighted is news coming out of ECCC and below the highlighted are our opinions.


DC

Batman #18-20 stories will consist of the fall out from "Death of the Family" and "Robin's Death" in Batman INC. #18 is a Harper Row POV story and #19-20 is a two part story. Starting with #21, Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo will be putting together a 9 part arc. Snyder has stated the story will revolve around Riddler and a few new villains. Nightwing has lost his circus and his former sidekick is dead. Now that there is nothing left for him in Gotham, he will be permanently fighting crime in the Chicago. Ventriloquist will be returning to the Bat-universe as a female and she's fighting Batgirl.

I'm a little worried that Harper Row will be the next Robin. I was hoping she would be the new Oracle or be Batman's new Harold. I do believe a nine part series is long but Snyder knows what he is doing and I trust him. Also, the comic market community is very happy to see The Riddler make a strong return to the New 52. The Riddler has not been used properly since the Hush storyline.

Is anyone else a little bummed out that Nightwing is going to Chicago? I was really hoping for the return of Bludhaven.


I was just a bit disappointed with the ending of "Death of the Family". I loved the writing, art and the direction it was going but I wanted something huge to happen, and in the end the status quo was more or less maintained. I thought "Death of the Family" deserved at least one death (it would have been great to see Bruce's downfall after his best friend and confidant, Alfred got killed) but we got it in Batman Inc. It was good to see something really changing, and I think for the best. Comic book characters have to have real stakes, we have to fear that something awful could happen to them at any moment and it was great to see Grant Morrison allow the worst to happen. I'm excited to see where they go with the next story line and trust the Snyder/Capullo tandem more than anyone since Miller's "Dark Knight Returns".

100 Bullets is coming back....sort of. The original team on the book are reuniting and telling us new stories. Don't worry, they are not pulling a "Before Watchmen" stunt. Brother Lono will be told after the events of 100 Bullets #100.

In May, Snyder and Sean Murphy are collaborating on a new vertigo series, The Wake. Newsarama- "There's a discovery at the bottom of the ocean that unlocks the mysteries of the sea. "There's a post-apocalyptic element, horror, and more science-fiction," Snyder said. "It's definitely different from anything you've ever seen from us."

It looks like The Wake is Michael Crichton's Sphere but add a decent amount of awesome.

I'd say it looks more like They Abyss, but that's only to be different from Phil. It also reminds me a bit of the works of HP Lovecraft because it blends horror and sci-fi in an apocalytic setting which just says Cthulhu to me. Which makes me extremely excited. I love Snyder and Sean Murphy's "Punk Rock Jesus" was wonderful.

Now that "Rotworld" has ended, Snyder is leaving Swamp Thing and Lemire will be focusing on Buddy Baker's A list celebrity status in Animal Man. In Animal Man #18, Baker wins an Academy Award and something terrible happens. In Justice League Dark, Lemire will start exploring what the typical DC superheroes think of the DC's Magic World.

If something terrible happens to Buddy Baker, it better not be about his family. The first 17 issues of Animal focuses on his family a lot, so I definitely want to see something different. 

When I learned that Lemire will be exploring what DC's typical superheroes think of DC's Magic World, I jumped in joy. If done right, DC will be pushing a sibling rivalry between the two different types of heroes. Maybe we will see a John Constantine vs Batman and Swamp Thing vs Superman. 

Anything Justice League Dark is exciting to me. Can't wait for Guillermo Del Toro's movie. Can we get some news about that please???

A Secret Six book is not on DC's agenda.

This sucks but I'm ok with DC not rushing it. Today on Twitter, I  mentioned I wanted to see a brand new Catman origin. It could be interesting if Batwing was not the first Batman of Africa. Instead, Batman recruited Catman but he was a failed Batman INC experiment and Batman tried to shut him down which forces Catman went into hiding.

A Pandora on-going is happening. The title is Trinity of Sin: Pandora

Cheshire will be making her New 52 in Red Hood and the Outlaws.

I want her to be everything that Starefire is not. Even though Starfire at times is linked to both Jason and Roy, she has not ended their bromance. I want to see Cheshire be RHATO's Yoko Ono.

The next big Flash story will take over the rest of 2013 and it will be all about the Reverse Flash. His powers and identity will all be new.

In Flash #11, Reserve Flash returned. I believe Reserve Flash is from the future and he's Wally West's Dad.

Earth 2 # 11 will be the first appearance of two very unexpected characters.

Marvel

West Coast Ultimates will be seen in 2013. Members of the West Coast will be Ultimate Wonder-man, Vision and Black Knight.

I thought the Ultimate line was being canceled.....

Samesies. 

Age of Ultron #1 will not show the battle between the Avengers and Ultron. #1 starts with the Avengers already defeated by Ultron.

For the past five years, Marvel has had way too many crossovers. Most of the crossovers are too expensive and take way too much time. AOU better be 1.2.3 finished.

I like the idea of it showing the Avengers already being beaten up by Ultron. Let's see where it goes. 

Hawkeye plans: #9 is everything that happened in #8 but in the perspective of the women in his life. #10 introduces a new villain and #11 involves a mystery and Hawkeye's Pizza Dog. Fraction also plans for an entire issue to be done in sign language. 

I love fiction where we show the same scene through a different perspective. I love seeing different angles and what another perspective can show us about something we have already seen. 

Image Comics

The Walking Dead introduces a new character, Ezekial in #108. #109 sees the return of Maggie. It was confirmed there will be no Waking Dead book spinoffs.   After the events of Invincible #100, fans will see the return of Angstrom Levy. Future issues of Invincible will focus on the Golden Age team up of Allen the Alien and Oliver.

The Walking Dead #100 was sad, shocking and paved the road for the next few years. Overall, I was very disappointed with Invincible #100. Kirkman pulled a page from Marvel's Ultimatum and tried to drown the world.  

In 2013, we will see a new Image comic book, Ghosted by Joshua Williamson and art by Goran Sudzuka. According to Williamson, Ghosted is Ocean's Eleven 86 the casino sub haunted house. It is a five book mini series and it's already finished which means it will be shipped without delays. Thanks to Comic Book Resources - " The series focuses on a thief named Jackson T. Winters who is broken out of prison by a collector intent on capturing a ghost. Winters puts together a dream team of ghost hunters including a magician, a psychic, a skeptic and others."

You say the words "this comic is Ocean's 11 meets-" just about anything and I'm on board. Though I'm instantly doubtful it can maintain the charm of either George Clooney or Brad Pitt. Or Matt Damon. Or Casey Affleck. Or... forget it. But when you throw in "haunted house", just tell me where to sign up.


Fraction will be collaborating with Chaykin for a book titled, "Satellite Sam". The book is set during the Golden Age of Television and its a noir story that involves drunks and sex. Another Image book, "Sex Criminals" written by Chip Zdarsky involves two lovers that can stop time when they are intimate.

Prior to ECCC, one book that has been getting a huge push in the comic market is Paul Casey's Sex. Casey describes Sex as "50 Shades of Grey meets Batman". The plot is a superhero stops fighting crime after his mentor's dying wish is that he hang up the cape and start a new life. According to Casey, the main protagonist is emotionally stunted as an teenager and he's forced to enter the "real world" at the age of 35 but with the attitude of a teenager.

In Other ECCC News:

IDW: Joe Harris will be writing X-Files: Season 10. #1 will be picking up sometime after the last movie ended. Michael Walsh (Artist on Comeback) will be the artist on Season 10.

I love the team on this book but I'm worried for one major reason. Does Season #10 mean we will never see a X-Files movie???? 

David Duchovny has been trying to get fans to sign up for a new X-Files movie. I hope he didn't get his wish here in a continuation of the series via comics because this story deserves live-action accreditation. That being said, if you're not reading "Comeback" you're missing out. It's a truly unique series and Michael Walsh's art is absolutely fantastic. So I'll certainly be buying this comic even if it means no new movie. 

Dynamite Entertainment: Gail Simone has been officially announced as the writer of Red Sonja. Mark Waid will be writing a Green Hornet story which follows the radio show continuity.

In News Outside ECCC

Announced on Kevin Smith's Fatman on Batman, he and Geoff Johns are working together. It has not been confirmed whether or not its a book or a movie.

The Illumi-Nerdi Predicts the 2013 Academy Awards

Best Picture- Argo, Amour, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Django Unchained, Les Miserables, Life of Pi, Lincoln, Silver Linings Playbook, Zero Dark Thirty

Will Win: Argo. The talk has been all Argo this Oscar season with it taking home the big prize at the BAFTAs, Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild Awards, and Directors Guild Awards and I’m thinking it gets the big prize too. Plus, how much fun is it to say Argo fuck yourself?

Should Win: Argo. Not to say Argo was a spectacular piece of filmmaking (I actually liked The Town more) but Argo was the best movie this year. It was funny when it needed to be (pretty much any scene involving John Goodman and Alan Arkin) and incredibly tense, particularly the last third of the movie. Ben Affleck has really come a long way from his Gigli and Surviving Christmas days (….kinda liked Surviving Christmas, not gonna lie). 

Could Win: Silver Linings Playbook. I really loved this movie. I’m not really a David O. Russell fan; The Fighter’s only captivating quality was Christian Bale as drug addled Dicky Eklund. But everything about this movie really clicked for me and I might have even liked it more than Argo. But I have to go with the odds and say Argo’s going to take this one. 

Best Director- Michael Haneke, Ang Lee, David O. Russell, Steven Spielberg, Behn Zeitlin

Will Win: Steven Spielberg. Spielberg turned in another excellent film. I don’t think he’s ever made a bad movie since 1975 (though arguments could be made for The Lost World and War of the Worlds, both perfectly watchable movies). Though in a year where there are some noticeable absentees Spielberg will win this. 

Should Win: Ben Affleck (though not nominated).This entire category is one big snub. Ben Affleck, Kathryn Bigelow and Quentin Tarantino all should have been nominated and all could have won. I just don’t understand how a movie can be nominated for best picture, be a favorite for best picture and the academy does not nominate the director. Can someone explain this to me?

Could Win: Ang Lee.  Filming an unfilmable movie and only receiving positive acclaim is a pretty good accomplishment and there’s an outside chance he goes home with a Best Director Oscar. This movie received the second most nominations (second only to Lincoln) and it is pretty likely it only takes some of the technical awards. But Ang Lee does have the best chance besides Spielberg.

Best Actor- Bradley Cooper, Daniel Day-Lewis, Hugh Jackman, Joaquin Phoenix, Denzel Washington

Will Win: Daniel Day-Lewis. There’s not much discussion on this one. It’s kind of a no-brainer and he really does deserve it. He completely transformed into Lincoln (as he does for any role). But as much as he earned this one, I wouldn’t mind seeing someone else win. Like…

Should Win: Bradley Cooper. I am NOT saying Bradley Cooper was better than Daniel Day-Lewis. What I am saying is that anytime Daniel Day-Lewis is in a category, it’s kind of unfair for everyone else in said category. So, let’s talk about who should win BESIDES the esteemed DD-L. Any other year Bradley Cooper would have a damn good chance at the best actor win. He took me completely by surprise in this performance and kind of blew me away. I’m actually pretty excited to see what he’ll do next (besides the sequel to the abysmal Hangover II). 

Could Win: Hugh Jackman. I’m hearing some minor talk of Hugh Jackman for Les Mis but Daniel Day-Lewis is as close to a lock as can be. Also any other year Joaquin Phoenix would have a pretty good chance at this (his performance really was excellent, though the movie itself shockingly slow moving).

Best Actress- Jessica Chastain, Jennifer Lawrence, Emmanuelle Riva, Quvenzhané Wallis and Naomi Watts

Will Win: Jennifer Lawrence. One of many surprisingly great performances in this movie. I think it’s a toss-up between Chastain and Lawrence for this category with Lawrence taking a slight edge. 

Should Win: Jessica Chastain. I liked Zero Dark Thirty. It was good. Not great. It took a long time to get moving, a real long time. Once it did, it was pretty damn good. Most of the time we were kind of following Jessica Chastain around and she really pushed this movie forward. It’s refreshing to see a movie completely driven by a strong female character. Chastain has only been in movies where she won buckets full of praise. While it might not happen this year, Chastain’s time is coming real soon

.

Could Win: Emmanuelle Riva. There’s a good chance J-Law and Chastain split some of the votes so Riva could get the elderly vote.

Best Supporting Actor- Alan Arkin, Robert De Niro, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Tommy Lee Jones, Christoph Waltz

Will Win: Tommy Lee Jones. This is as much of a toss-up category as we’ve seen in recent years so anyone can really win this. I find it hard to believe that Jones only has one Oscar win (1993’s The Fugitive) and I think he has a pretty good chance at getting his second. 

Should Win: Robert De Niro. I love anytime an actor can step out of his or her comfort zone and do something different. And this is especially true for Robert De Niro. I’ve been sick of him playing stereotypical Italians or gangsters or stereotypical Italian gangsters. He did something else for Silver Linings (as the father of a man with serious emotional problems and has a few pretty serious ones himself).

Could Win: Christoph Waltz. As I said, this race could go to any one of these actors and I’m only giving Tommy Lee Jones a slight lead over Waltz and De Niro. But I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see Waltz come home with his second Oscar.

Best Supporting Actress: Amy Adams, Sally Field, Anne Hathaway, Helen Hunt, Jacki Weaver

Will Win: Anne Hathaway. Another great performance for Hathaway and I’m giving her good odds at beating out Sally Field for her turn in Les Miserables. 

Should Win: Jacki Weaver. Another situation for Silver Linings in a case of “always a bridesmaid never a bride” with the only exception possibly being Jennifer Lawrence. I think I’ve harped on about the performances for this film enough but Jacki Weaver was wonderful in this movie. 

Could Win: Sally Field. She was pretty good in this movie. She didn’t shock me with an unbelievable performance, but she did what she needed to do. There’s a decent chance she wins this after not even getting nominated for 1994’s Forest Gump.

The Making of "Ms. Friday Night" by Work It Work It!

25 year old women from Long Island are going NUTS right now. Summit Drive has reunited....kinda...sort of. Former members, Mike Lombardo and Evan Loewenstein have teamed up with Graham Watson, Meagan Brauer and Tim Kubart of Tim and the Space Cadets (check out their LOST inspired video- 2nd Grade Show) to form Work It Work It.


Work It Work It's first single is titled, "Ms. Friday Night". The story behind the video are the five band members experiences at a party with "Ms. Friday Night". According to Mike, "Ms. Friday Night" is "a girl who does whatever she likes, she's very unpredictable and is just looking to have some fun". In the video, Evan spends his time at the party finding "Ms. Friday Night", but she winds up running off on him in the end. Mike's story is that he is overconfident when it comes to picking up girls, though never successful. Meagan is just there to party and have a good time. She spends the night Workin' It Workin' It in the exclusive bathroom party until she wears her self out and comes stumbling out in the end. Graham Watson starts off wandering through the party and comes across a delicious bowl of nachos. He winds up spending all of the party eating them. When the other party goers find out he's trying to finish the entire bowl, they cheer him on in his efforts. Tim's character is the complete opposite of Mike's. He is a ladies man and he's really good at it. As the party ends, all the band members find each other after their little adventures and come together to end the night. The End.

"Ms. Friday Night" took about 7 months to complete. They filmed the house party portion of the video in one 15 hour day. They emptied Mike's apartment of all it's furniture and everyone came over at about 8 in the morning (it was really hot in the apartment too, they filmed it in June--everyone was dying).  A few weeks later, the band rented out a studio in Astoria for 5 or 6 hours and had a camera guy tape them playing the song over and over again.  Very much like the first time, the studio was extremely hot.  Once again, they were dying due to New York City's record high heat. Evan and Mike edited the video over the next month and a half.  By the time they finished that, Mike's good friend from work Andy Milkis (check out his website here) offered to do all of the color correcting and color grading, which was a major success.  Mike would sit with him a few nights after work in the office and they'd play with the colors and mood and tones. Many moons in the making and it's finally done.  They had a small launch party at Mike and Evan's apartment and the video was uploaded the following night.

The Top 5 Things We Want to See in Star Wars Episode VII

Star Wars being sold to Disney is the best news I’ve heard in film in a while. It seemed like the sequel trilogy was dead in the water after the prequels were almost unanimously disliked (I think they were decent movies. If separated from episodes IV, V and VI, they stand as pretty decent sci-fi movies, though certainly flawed). But the resurrection of the franchise and bringing in both Michael Arndt (Little Miss Sunshine, which he won an Oscar for, Toy Story 3, and the upcoming Hunger Games sequel) and JJ Abrams (if you don’t know who he is then you probably stumbled on this website by mistake and don’t belong here at all) is extremely exciting for a Star Wars geek like me. First off, I know there are thousands if not millions of people who think a new Star Wars movie is a bad idea. I couldn't disagree more, especially under these circumstances. The new movies are being produced by the most successful company in the history of companies, penned by an Academy Award winning writer, and is going to be helmed by a director with some serious geek cred who grew up as a Star Wars fan (just watch any of his TV shows or films for proof of this) and wants to make a movie that will make Star Wars fans proud. I think I've made my excitement clear. We already know there is going to be mind-blowing interstellar dogfights, state of the art effects from the folks over at Industrial Light and Magic and back flipping, saber-spinning, seizure-inducing lightsaber battles, so let’s get into the Top 5 things I want to see in the new Star Wars movie.

5. Go Easy on the Vets. Look, a bigger Star Wars fan you will not find but let’s face it, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill are no Meryl Streep and Marlon Brando, and certainly less so in their old(er) age. These two have not gotten any more attractive as the years have passed and their performance creds have lingered around the Kathy Griffin level of acting (that is to say, not acting). While I absolutely love the fact that Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa Skywalker Solo Cougar Mellencamp will have parts in the new movie, I really believe it should be relegated to minor ones. I mean, I want to see them. I want to see what they’re up to and by all means I want them to play important roles, but I think limited screen time would probably be best for the pair. And this is certainly possible; think how important a role Emperor Palpatine played in the movies, and was really only given 3 or 4 total scenes were he didn't appear as a blurry hologram. Shit, look at Boba Fett, he has probably 5 scenes and says a total of 15 words and has since become one of the most popular characters in the history of science fiction. Harrison Ford on the other hand, we could probably stand to see a bit more of. He has been steadily acting (successfully) since Star Wars ended and is a legend in the field starring in some enormously successful movies. Just as long as his role isn’t that of a desperate father or husband trying like hell to clear his name or save his family. And as long as he doesn’t utter the words to a Russian terrorist aboard the ship that made the kessel run in twelve parsecs: “Get off my Millennium Falcon!”

4. A New Jedi Order.Who doesn’t love a good light saber duel? The strongest sequences in the entire prequel trilogy were the lightsaber duels (particularly the Darth Maul vs. Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon scene from the first movie), so we certainly need to have some newbies who know their way around a lightsaber.  With Luke (and Leia) being the last Jedis in the entire galaxy after the death of Vader, the new movies seem to be lacking the Jedi or Sith adversary it so desperately needs. And with Luke and Leia being old farts now (how cool would it have been to see Leia as a Jedi in her prime?) their clearly has to be some new Jedis coming up in the minor leagues. I think the obvious route to go is have Luke and Leia opening a school for young Jedis to come and train under the only two Jedis left in the galaxy. With that, a pretty decent idea would be to have one or several of their students go rogue and betray Luke’s New Jedi Order. It’d be a good way to establish a sexy young villain that could last through the sequel trilogy. I’m also curious how many (if any) of the characters from the Expanded Universe will appear, and in what capacity. Mara Jade (Luke’s eventual wife with a somewhat troubled past) is one of the most complex female characters in the entire Star Wars Universe (much more so than Princess Leia) and has so much depth. I’d be surprised if they were to use some characters from the Expanded Universe (like Han and Leia’s kids Anakin, Jaina and Jacen [a possible candidate for the student who goes rogue]) but left out Mara Jade.

3. Some Sweet JJ Abrams Easter Eggs: JJ Abrams is famous for inserting Easter Eggs (or intentional hidden messages) into his work. Hidden Lost mentions in his works like Person of Interest, Fringe, and Cloverfield, the appearance of Slusho in Cloverfield, Star Trek, Fringe and Alias, the name “Kelvin” (Abrams’ grandfather) in Star Trek, Lost and Super 8 are all fun little hints that JJ Abrams drops into his works. We, as fans have come to expect Easter Eggs in all his works (one of which may play particular importance in my number 1 thing I want to see in Episode VII). I hope it is safe to assume that some of his frequent collaborators will also make an appearance (whether behind or in front of the camera). Greg Grunberg has appeared, in some less obvious ways than others, in almost every JJ Abrams Joint since Felicity. Damon Lindelof (another gargantuan Star Wars fan, see the little known TV show LOST for further references) has collaborated on multiple JJ Abrams projects and could potentially bring some fascinating new ideas to Episode VII (while Michael Arndt is the primary writer for the new movie, Lindelof is no stranger to rewrites, having rewritten my favorite Sci-Fi flick of 2012, Prometheus). It would be great if Matt Reeves (Cloverfield, and the satisfyingly chilling Let Me in) were brought in in some capacity, and eventually direct Episode VIII or IX (as Abrams is only signed on for VII). My suggestion for an Easter Egg would be for a character to say that he found a blue planet with a mysterious island that is responsible for keeping all of the evil in the world in and that moves when you spin a Frozen Donkey Wheel. 

2. Keep George Lucas Away: I love George Lucas. He is responsible for the best and most complex universe since… well, the Universe. His ideas have spawned incredible movies, fascinating video games and complex literature in the realm of science fiction. Not to mention his saga has created an entire generation of visionary scientists, filmmakers and writers (I would not be interested in science fiction or perhaps even writing itself had I need seen Star Wars and had my imagination expanded for the first time). All that being said, George Lucas should really have a minimal role in these movies. Yes, it’s his vision. Yes, it’s his franchise. Yes, it’s his universe. But look what happened when Lucas was allowed to write, direct, produce, edit, compose, distribute and basically have violent congress with Episodes I-III. The prequel trilogy was a substandard inception of the story of the Skywalker clan (as I discussed before, not bad as a standalone series, but as a predecessor to perhaps the most iconic trilogy ever conceived?).  As much as I love the man, I’m perfectly happy only seeing his name next to “Based on the characters created by:” and nowhere else. What worked about “Empire” and “Jedi” is that they were Lucas’ brilliant ideas brought to the screen by more capable directors and writers. That is what I believe we have here. A much more talented director in JJ Abrams and a brilliant up-and-coming writer in Michael Arndt, who has now been entrusted with three of the biggest franchises in recent memory (Toy Story, The Hunger Games and Star Wars).

1. A Shared Star Wars and Star Trek Universe: I’ll be the first to admit, I’m not sure how feasible this idea really is. I mean Star Wars is set “a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away” (I still get chills when I see those words) and Star Trek is set in the 23^rd century, the distant future. But the mere fact that JJ Abrams is responsible for rebooting the two biggest space-based franchises ever, presents us with a unique opportunity: set Star Wars and Star Trek in the same universe. Really, how cool would this be? I’m certainly no Star Trek aficionado so I couldn’t really begin to theorize how this could really happen. And by no means am I saying: “Hey! What if Captain Kirk and Han Solo opened a bordello together called Captain James T. NerfHerder’s??” or “How about Data is actually a much further advanced model of C-3PO?!” (I actually kinda like that one). But, in the same way JJ Abrams drops little hints and Easter Eggs into his work (like R2D2 in Star Trek), why not drop a random Romulan in the background of the New Republic? Or why not have a planet designated"Ceti Alpha V"? I'm just saying JJ, it's something to think about.
